Can I use ProtectorXT with any firearm?
ProtectorXT will work with most popular long guns. Please see the ProtectorXT page for tested models and dimensions.
How do biometrics work?
Biometric fingerprint authentication uses a sensor that “reads” a fingerprint and compares it to the authorized fingerprints stored in its memory by the owner. If it finds a match, then it signals the lock to release the firearm. All of this happens in under 2 seconds! Learn more here.
Where is ProtectorXT manufactured?
Protector XT is designed, tested, built and serviced in the United States of America
Where can I put ProtectorXT?
Protector XT can be attached to a secure wall stud or on a secure vertical post. Mounting holes are provided in the product’s backbone component; instructions and appropriate hardware are included with ProtectorXT for installation. ProtectorXT should be mounted vertically with the firearm’s barrel pointing toward the ceiling.
How do I install ProtectorXT?
The ProtectorXT’s design allows it to be mounted perpendicular to or parallel with a securing surface such as a wall, post or other vertical surface. ProtectorXT can be secured to a wall stud or other similar surface in a building, room or other building structure such as a garage, hunting camp or shooting range, on a weather-protected post. Mounting holes are provided in the product’s backbone component; instructions are included with ProtectorXT for installation.
How do I program it for the first time?
ProtectorXT arrives with complete instructions for the gun owner to program his/her fingerprint to access the firearm. Once the owner’s fingerprints are programmed, we recommend programming at least one other user’s fingerprints for back-up purposes.
What is ProtectorXT made of?
ProtectorXT is manufactured from polycarbonate, a shatterproof lightweight material used in jet windshields, police riot gear, and bulletproof limos. The product weighs slightly less than 8lbs.
How is ProtectorXT different from other gun locks or vaults?
With its patented biometric access, ProtectorXT doesn’t require keys that can be lost or combinations that can be forgotten. It’s a great addition to a safe or vault, which is typically located out of the way. As it is designed for a single firearm and wall-mounted, it can be conveniently placed by a door or another handy location for emergencies. These factors allow quick access to the firearm as well as securing it from children and intruders.
How many fingerprints can be stored?
ProtectorXT can store up to 32 unique fingerprints. We recommend that an individual program at least 3 fingerprints (thumb, fore and middle fingers) for each hand so that the owner has access with his/her fingerprint even if one digit may be damaged due to a cut or other image changing event. It is recommended that the owner practice the authentication process several times in order to become comfortable with the process, regardless of the circumstances of the need to retrieve the firearm.
Why can’t I just program one fingerprint?
You will likely use just one finger most of the time to access the firearm, but we recommend programming 3 fingers/thumb of each hand in case something, like an injury (for example, a cut finger) alters the primary fingerprint(s).
What if I want to delete fingerprints?
The reset button inside the unit, accessible only by an authorized user, can be used to clear the fingerprint memory and return the numeric code to its factory setting. See the owner’s manual for complete instructions.
Does it need power?
Yes. The biometric fingerprint reader and locking mechanism of ProtectorXT requires the use of 4 AA batteries. The batteries need to be replaced once per year as outlined in the operating instructions. We also provide an external battery pack for backup power supply.
What is the trigger guard trap spacer?
The trigger guard trap spacer is included with the ProtectorXT unit to ensure a snug fit. It will not be needed for all long gun models, so you will want to test yours to see if you want a tighter fit. With some models, the firearm might be able to be lifted slightly in the locked unit, allowing access to the trigger. While usually only the ceiling is in danger in such a case, installing the spacer will ensure this cannot happen.
Will the device harm the custom finish on my gun?
No, the surfaces that come in contact with the firearm are a durable, non-metallic, rust-resistant substance that will not mar or damage the firearm.
Will the device lock out after failed attempts? Is there secondary access?
The device does not lock out after failed attempts. Secondary access is provided by a digital keypad.
