Public safety is a much more complex issue than the mere outlawing of firearms. According to recent news reports, in the US, there are over 2.3 million individuals in prison for breaking some law. That is one of every 100 adults in the country. Clearly, passing laws will not prevent criminals from ignoring them. Proponents of additional gun laws often refer to mass shootings at Columbine, Aurora and Newtown as the basis for the need for additional laws. However, analysis shows that the common threads in each of these instances were apparent psychiatric disorders by the perpetrator and/or illegal access to the firearm. The psychiatric issue is so complex that no one has come up with a viable plan. But maintaining authorized access is the responsibility of the gun owner and most with whom I am familiar take this issue very seriously. That isn’t to say we can’t do a better job, but political/legal intervention is not likely the most effective approach. Rather, it’s something we gun owners can adequately address ourselves.
