Accidental discharge – there are several instances in which this can occur. Loaded weapons if dropped can accidentally discharge, by individuals who are either too young to realize that a weapon is loaded or adults who are just not aware of the loaded weapon.
Unauthorized Access – the two most prevalent occurrences of this situation is a criminal who seizes the opportunity to get his hands on a weapon or by individuals who have some sort of emotional disorder.
The key to preventing the latter is to prevent easy access to the weapon. There are now technological solutions to assist:
1. If the weapon is not needed quickly for self-defense, there are a number locks that are available using keys, combination locks and codes to prevent individuals from easily accessing a weapon.
2. However, if there is a need for quick access, such as for protection, the only realistic technology uses biometric technology. This allows only individuals whose fingerprints are programmed to gain access to the weapon. Biometric technology to prevent unauthorized access is the new and upcoming approach to improve gun safety.
