If we passed 100 laws to restrict the purchase and use of guns, safety would still get down to personal responsibility. For parents, that also includes the responsibility to “parent,” that is to know what your children are up to and being certain that they do not have access to weapons without proper supervision. Parents have to be aware of the psychological and behavioral issues their children may be exhibiting and not be afraid to acknowledge it and take appropriate action. The last three major gun catastrophes, i.e. Columbine, Aurora and Newtown, were perpetrated by very young men who everyone acknowledged exhibited antisocial behavior. Teachers also bear some responsibility in this matter. Society needs to allow responsible parents, teachers and others to be able to report antisocial behavior and affect appropriate intervention without stigma or personal liability. Unfortunately, we will always have individuals among us who are capable of these horrendous acts. We need to be more vigilant and not be afraid to take the right actions to prevent the ones we can.
