Purchasing a gun for home defense is becoming a more common occurrence. In the past, hand guns appeared to be the gun of choice for this purpose. There were some good reasons for this. The cost of hand guns was lower, they are portable and could be easily transported and they are easy to handle. However, they have one major flaw. In a confrontation, they are not as effective in deterring a potential criminal as other weapons. Well-trained police officers have been measured to be able to hit their target only 30% of the time in a static, non-threatening situation. When confronted by a criminal who also has a weapon, their accuracy erodes to only 18%! If you have the same level of training as a police officer, then in a similar situation you have a 1 in 5 chance of hitting your target. Without that training level, it’s even less.
Most professionals will say that the best weapon for home defense is a shot gun. Its mere appearance is often enough to disarm a criminal. If forced to fire, its effectiveness is significantly better than a hand gun. Lastly, new configurations are providing more portability and ease of handling. If you’re considering a weapon for home defense, give this some thought.
